The University of Findlay’s Aberdeen Angus herd began in the fall of 2008 with the purchase of 4 fullblood and 8 percentage females and a breeding bull from Spring Creek Farms, Dr. Hansen of Hampton, Iowa and Diamond J Ranch, George Jenkins, of North Platt, Nebraska. We added several heifers from the National Aberdeen Sale at the National Western Stock Show in Denver, Colorado in 2009 and 2010 then purchased several bred cows and heifers, along with Bar J Hoss for the Bar J Partnership Dispersal. A couple more additions from the National Aberdeen Sale and the McDonald Dispersal in 2011 improved our numbers and overall depth of females at that time. Then in the fall of 2012 the University was fortunate to be able to acquire the entire Diamond J Ranch fullblood herd. This acquisition included 3 National Champion or Reserve National Champion Heifers and one of the greatest American bred Aberdeen bulls, Double J The Brick 281. The Brick is a 2 time National Champion Bull, a feat yet to be duplicated. The University currently runs about 40 fullblood Aberdeen brood cows and has shown or sold at the state and national levels.
The goal of maintaining a fullblood Aberdeen herd is to provide our students with a real world experience where management, promotion and marketing is highlighted. Students have the opportunity to join out Beef Cattle Show Team, assist with the cattle treatment and care and gain valuable knowledge with our Lowline herd.
We strive to produce productive, functional, moderate framed cattle with a commercial application.
